Man United in ‘a really bad moment’, says Amorim… as Keane claims boss ‘cannot believe how bad’ players are

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said his side made “a lot of mistakes” during their 4-1 thrashing at Newcastle on Saturday – and club legend Roy Keane believes the boss is “shocked” by the lack of quality in his squad.

Three goals inside 29 second-half minutes gave the Magpies a first league double over United in 94 years, leaving Amorim’s side a closer number of points to the relegation zone than fourth place.

“This is a really bad moment but we have proven that we can get up and play again,” Amorim told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They were clearly better than us but we made a lot of mistakes that helped our opponents to build confidence and score goals.

“We are doing things better but sometimes we have bad moments and lose a lot of confidence. We don’t control games when things are going badly.”

Roy Keane: Man United ‘bad’

Only Aston Villa and relegated Southampton have made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season than United, who committed two of their 12 such mistakes at St James’ Park.

United were considerable underdogs to procure a positive result and are 14th after a four-game winless run in all competitions.

Keane – a seven-time top-flight champion with United – said Amorim would be “scratching his head”, having seen United concede the fourth-most goals of any club in the division since his arrival from Sporting in November.

“I bet he cannot believe how bad this team is,” Keane told Sky Sports. “He obviously cannot say that but this group of players, the mistakes they are making – they can’t seem to get around the pitch.

“I think the Premier League has caught this manager and his coaching staff out. I know people do their homework but I think he has gone in there and been shocked about how bad this group of players are.”

Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir mistakes

Much of the pre-match focus was on United’s established first-choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who was left out of the squad after making mistakes for both goals he conceded in their 2-2 draw at Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.

That meant a Premier League debut for Turkiye international Altay Bayindir, who contributed an error of his own on an afternoon to forget.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes completed the 4-1 win with a composed finish after Joelinton intercepted an attempted pass by Bayindir.

“I can’t understand it!”

“If you look at our season, it has been like that,” Amorim replied when he was asked about Bayindir, evading the chance to confirm whether Onana will be restored against Lyon.

The Portuguese confirmed that forward Joshua Zirkzee, who was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury, would not be fit for the decider against the Ligue 1 club.
