Manchester United are considering Roma’s offer for Zirkzee

Manchester United have acknowledged an official approach from AS Roma for forward Joshua Zirkzee, with the Serie A side attempting to negotiate a loan including a conditional purchase clause. The Dutch attacker, recruited from Bologna roughly a year and a half ago for around £35 million, has slipped down the hierarchy under Ruben Amorim, prompting growing speculation of a mid-season departure.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on his Italian-language YouTube channel that intermediaries have confirmed Roma’s bid, while also stressing that United are not rushing to accept. According to Romano, the Premier League club are “taking their time” before responding, consistent with plans laid out prior to Christmas.

United’s stance and squad limitations

With just one goal in 10 Premier League games this campaign — only three starts from 18 matches — Zirkzee’s impact has been limited. However, any exit depends heavily on reinforcements arriving early in the January window.

Amorim has reiterated that letting players leave before additions arrive would be risky: “It’s difficult for anyone to go if we don’t recruit properly. We are already light. Even at full strength, we’re missing something. We’re expected to win constantly. No justifications.”

The manager’s position reflects the club’s shortage of depth, particularly while Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo are away at AFCON, delaying potential outgoings until their returns.

Player interest and Roma’s assurances

Despite previous links to Everton and West Ham United, a return to Serie A seems the most likely scenario. Italian outlet Gazzetta reports that Roma sporting director Ricky Massara and coach Gian Piero Gasperini have promised Zirkzee a crucial spot in their 3-4-2-1 setup, and the forward has signalled his willingness to join.

Zirkzee believes increased minutes are essential as he aims to make his country’s World Cup squad. Remaining at Old Trafford risks leaving him without sufficient playing time to earn a place in the Netherlands setup.

For now, United’s approval remains the final hurdle. Until the club secures replacements, the striker’s future will stay on hold.
