Arsenal’s clash with Bayern Munich brings together two sides that have been flawless in Europe so far, each holding perfect records and pushing well clear domestically. Victory at the Emirates would edge either closer to a secure finish in the league stage and strengthen their path toward the round of 16, all while extending impressive starts at home and abroad. The London club has stumbled only once this season, while the German champions remain unbeaten.
Yet the encounter carries an added layer of intrigue through the reunion of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, whose connection once lit up Crystal Palace. Their understanding, sharpened during countless chess games at the training ground, made them one of the Premier League’s most entertaining duos. Olise introduced Eze to the board, prompting hours of study and sparking a partnership that at times felt instinctive on the pitch.
Eze’s flair for the game even earned him a $20,000 online chess prize earlier this year, though his friend may pose the bigger strategic threat tonight. They followed similar career routes from the Championship to Selhurst Park, linking up for eight goals, all created by Olise for Eze. Now, with both preparing for a potential World Cup appearance, they meet as opponents on one of football’s biggest stages.
As Arsenal and Bayern chase dominance, the personal subplot adds tension. One will hope to make the decisive move by the final whistle.
Olise’s rise in Germany
Michael Olise has flourished since moving to Bavaria. The 23-year-old has collected a Ballon d’Or nomination, earned a regular place for France, and lifted the Bundesliga trophy. It marks a remarkable rise from his arrival in England just a few years ago, when Palace signed him from Reading for £8m.
During three seasons in south London, he delivered 10 league goals in his final campaign before a £50m switch to Bayern. Manchester United had shown interest, but the winger chose a new challenge abroad. The decision has paid off spectacularly, with nine goals and 10 assists already this season.
His latest outing was a standout showing, producing two goals and three assists in a 6-2 victory over Freiburg. Though naturally introverted away from the pitch, he continues to show his quality in decisive moments and carries strong motivation to impress back in England.
His output has surged: he contributes a goal or assist every 85 minutes, has doubled his scoring rate from his Palace days, and shoots more frequently while still supplying chances at almost the same rate. The shift has turned him into one of Bayern’s most dangerous outlets.
Eze’s breakthrough moment
Eberechi Eze, meanwhile, enjoyed a landmark weekend. The lifelong Arsenal supporter hit his first senior hat-trick in a 4-1 triumph over Tottenham, making it the first treble in a north London derby since 1978. His rise has been steadier than Olise’s, shaped by earlier setbacks after unsuccessful spells at several London academies.
His move from QPR to Palace in 2020 transformed his fortunes, eventually leading to a £60m transfer to Arsenal following an FA Cup triumph. This year he has been one of the Premier League’s most productive English players, with only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, and Bryan Mbeumo registering more direct contributions.
With five goals and three assists across competitions, he has embraced the expectations that come with playing for a title-chasing side. Although he creates slightly less than he did at Palace, his threat in front of goal has grown, supported by a high volume of attempts that puts him top among Arsenal players.
His performances underline his influence on Mikel Arteta’s team. In tonight’s meeting, he and Olise stand as two forwards whose shared past gives their duel added meaning—even as both seek to deliver the decisive moment.
