Portland Timbers 1-1 San Jose Earthquakes: Late Judd leveller thwarts hosts

Preston Judd’s 93rd-minute equaliser snatched a 1-1 draw for 10-man San Jose Earthquakes as Portland Timbers missed the chance to leap into second.

San Jose’s Ian Harkes was sent off for two bookings after 52 minutes before Portland capitalised on their one-man advantage at Providence Park.

Timbers defender Juan Mosquera scored his first goal of the year in MLS, opening the scoring in the 71st minute from a Felipe Mora assist.

However, substitute Judd levelled in the dying seconds after capitalising on the rebound when Ousseni Bouda had been denied by Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis.

The Earthquakes had earlier rued a lack of composure from Beau Leroux and Amahl Pellegrino in front of goal, but their late heroics keep them seventh in the Western Conference.

The Timbers remain fourth in the same division heading into the international break, though fifth-placed Los Angeles FC have two games in hand on them and just a four-point gap to slice.

Data Debrief: Providence Park remains a fortress

Mora now has nine goal contributions this year in MLS, trailing only David Da Costa (10) and Antony (13) for most with the Timbers.

His fourth assist of the campaign helped the Timbers remain unbeaten in their last nine matches at Providence Park.

However, a late Judd goal was the least San Jose deserved, having accumulated 2.22 expected goals to Portland’s 0.92 in an entertaining clash.
