Pure passion from Nathan Jones with Charlton fans loving his post-match reaction to the 2-1 win at Mansfield on Tuesday night.

You can’t help but love the Welshman’s celebrations when his side win a game. It was no different at Mansfield, and you could see just how much it means to him.

Charlton extended their strong run to seven wins and one draw in eight games, dominating early on in the midweek fixture, with Thierry Small missing a header in the second minute and Christy Pym saving a shot from Macaulay Gillesphey.

Charlton then went ahead in the 22nd minute when Matty Godden capitalised on a misplaced pass from Louis Reed.

Mansfield levelled in the 40th minute through Matty Craig’s powerful 16-yard strike after a cross from Baily Cargill.

Charlton however hit back, taking the lead in the 74th minute via Tyreece Campbell’s low finish, the Addicks holding on despite late pressure from Mansfield, with Pym denying Chuks Aneke in stoppage time, to clinch the win.

Speaking to CharltonTV post-game Jones said: “It was very hard fought. There were so many pleasing aspects in terms of showing character, coming to a really difficult place to play. The crowd were up. They were really aggressive, fair play to them. They came after us. I thought we started quite well but then we weren’t really us. I didn’t feel we were relentless enough and that let them back into it but they deserve a lot of credit for that. But then second half we were a lot better.

“We made a few positive changes, for what we needed. Got the great goal by TC and then saw the game out really, really well. I’m really pleased because any win at the minute is excellent and this is a tough, tough place to come.”

For Campbell it was his third goal of the week following his sensational double against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

“I’ve been pleased with Tyreece Campbell since I came into the football club,” Jones said. “He gets better, and better and better. It’s a joy to see because I’ve worked in the Premier League and he’s as good as I’ve seen.”

With an assist from substitute Chuks Aneke and an impressive full Charlton debut by Tom McIntyre, the Addicks’ Manager was quick to praise the impact of the whole squad.

He said: “We’ve said it’s a squad game. Today we lost Lloyd Jones, Tom McIntyre came in and was outstanding and we needed that. It’s a squad game, it’s not an 11-man game anymore because of the relentlessness, because of how we play, because of the travelling and other aspects. We utilize our squad. Alex Mitchell comes on for five or six minutes and plays his part. All of them are game changers and they all know that and buy into that.

“Lloyd has a little bit of a tight calf so we’ve just got to be careful with him. He didn’t travel today. There are a lot of big games. We can’t risk anything on the back of one game, we back the squad, that’s why we utilize the squad.”

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough said: “They are one of the top sides and we have more than gone toe to toe with them.

“We gave them a good old game. Those little moments just went against us.

“There was nothing wrong with the performance tonight for large parts against a very good team.

“It was an incredibly narrow defeat – there was nothing in the game whatsoever.

“We just made two errors that led to their two goals and that was the difference in the game.

“On Saturday we benefited from the opposition making a couple of errors and Charlton did from us tonight, especially the first goal.

“Trying to play a first-time ball back to the keeper was ridiculous. We don’t usually do those sort of things and it is incredibly frustrating.

“If anyone was going to win it it looked like it would be us and I don’t think Christy had a shot to save before the goal.

“But I am a bit disappointed with Pymy as it’s gone in on his near post.”
