Sheffield Wednesday risk EFL sanctions with increased concern amongst the staff, players and fans after another late wages payment.

The Championship outfit faces repeated financial instability, with a second wage payment delay, highlighting ongoing cashflow issues under owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has a history of delayed payments.

Rob Staton (@robstaton) tweeted on the 30th of May: “Per sources, understand there has been another delay in payment of wages at Sheffield Wednesday this month. Follows a similar issue in March. Payment was eventually made in April. #SWFC”

Joe Crann (@YesWeCrann) also said: “I know that #SWFC fans are desperate for news, but the reality is that right now there are no new contracts signed, there are no new signings, or friendlies finalised, or details on the coaching staff contracts.

“Feels like a state of limbo, we can’t report what isn’t happening.”

Sheffield Wednesday are facing renewed financial concerns following a second delay in wage payments in 2025, delayed this month, echoing a similar issue in March that was resolved in April.

This follows a pattern of financial instability under owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has previously faced criticism for cashflow problems, including a failure to pay players’ wages on time in March 2025 due to a “temporary issue”.

The club faced a potential three-window transfer embargo if the March wages weren’t paid by early April, which they narrowly avoided by settling the payments.

The English Football League (EFL) imposes strict regulations, including a 30-day limit for delinquent payments within a season (July 2024 – June 2025), after which clubs face escalating sanctions, such as registration embargoes or potential points deductions.

Sheffield Wednesday were already under a registration embargo in November 2024 due to unpaid amounts to HMRC, highlighting recurring financial mismanagement.

The latest delay has heightened anxiety among staff, players, and fans, with no immediate resolution reported.

Joe Crann’s post sums up the broader uncertainty surrounding the club, with no new contracts, signings, or finalised friendlies, reflecting a “state of limbo”.

Chansiri’s history, including his 2023 call for fans to raise £2 million to cover debts and his refusal to inject more funds, adds to the tension.

A recent rejected offer from a Florida-based consortium to buy the club further clouds the future.

While the March delay was resolved, the recurrence suggests systemic issues.

The EFL could impose sanctions like a transfer embargo or points deduction if the current delay persists beyond the 30-day threshold.

Fans and stakeholders await clarity, but the lack of progress on and off the pitch fuels concern.

Sheffield Wednesday fans express frustration at facing another turbulent summer ahead

As mentioned Sheffield Wednesday risk EFL sanctions with increased concern after another late wages payment…

@aroundgroundsss: I don’t care how much he’s getting offered Accept it and move way. You clearly can’t afford to be running a football club and are slowly killing this football club. LEAVE. But hey it’s ok it’s all Danny rohls fault 🤣🤣🤣 Would you wanna work for an owner like this. Don’t give me that he signed a contract crap either. God damn this club sometimes Honestly people putting so much effort and hate into a manager who we all knew in January wanted out. Managers and players come and go it happens get over it. The issue how ever in Sheffield Wednesday football club isn’t going away any time soon. Again he’s failed us all and it will continue to happened again and again. Focus on the problem not someone who wants to get away from the problem

@Jamesy_boy: You feel for the staff at the club #swfc

@MReidy1984: How can you turn down a offer for the club when you clearly can’t afford to fund it.

@Daniel_Parkes: Terrifying isn’t it! 🤡

@AlienBlade1981: I would say pride… and not knowing when to cut your losses. Imagine if you had bought a business and you sank £20m into it… if someone came along and offered you £1m would you take it? Even knowing it is likely to cost you more by not selling as you think you can get more.

@fittall1987: It’s mental. According to DC the club is leaking money each month. It’s clear he doesn’t have the funds available to plug the gaps yet he’s sitting there knocking bids back without a care in the world. Why isn’t he biting their hands off?

@MReidy1984: Only thing can think hes confident of another bid.

@craggleman: That is the question I keep asking myself. Really cannot understand what is the benefit to owning a club and not having any ability to invest in it.

@IChambers82: He’s got to go ridiculous this now

@ljwhitehouse10: I really don’t get this shit stirring me. Chansiri does his best and hardly puts a foot wrong. He’s such a good bloke. i feel sorry for him. #swfc

@Scoz1985: If Chansiri can’t pay the players wages, why is he turning down substantial bids wanting to buy the club

@finswfc1: The worst owner in Sheffield Wednesday history

@tjchitt86: “Come play for Sheffield Wednesday where sometimes you get paid but not all the time. You’ll be managed by ‘who knows’ and their excellent coaching staff ‘question mark’, cheered on by a fanbase with all the enthusiasm of a dishcloth. See you at Owls in the Park!!” #swfc @TWWcast

@OriginalOwl1867: Embarrassing. What is his plan? He’s just turned down a decent amount of money. Why not just walk away, surely he is stressed by the situation?

@therealtbailey: Fans have had their patience pushed way too far by this owner. We’re beyond any sort of reasonable understanding with him. Unbelievably, it must be over 18months ago since I rang radio Sheffield and said “enough is enough”, and it’s as true now as it was back then. Depressing.

@GGlossop93: @thaiuniongroup have a word with Mr Dejphon Chansiri. Tell him on behalf of all Sheffield Wednesday fans, sell the club and never come back. We don’t want you or your family anywhere near our beloved football club!! #chansiriout #swfc

@IxW1867: Danny is the bad guy though right? #swfc

@Danworth2509: Think it’s time the @EFL step in before we end up like Reading. Clearly people are interested in us but he doesn’t want to sell but it’s just problem after problem! #EnoughIsEnough and it can’t go on like this! #swfc

@RussAmos333: How is this not a breach of the Articles of Association? How can directors claim to act in the club’s best interests? How long can this go on before the EFL steps in? Serious questions need serious answers. #SWFC #EFL #Governance @EFL

@jamesk11106: But yeah let’s not protest at Payday Loan inthe Park #swfc

@therealtbailey: At what point are you going to intervene @EFL

@deanrowdingswfc: He needs to be banned from owning a football club @EFL_Comms

@owenswfc1999: Wasn’t he offered money up front from the consortium to help avoid this as well?? #swfc

@Jack_Heeley96: EFL have to step in surely, rejects a takeover bid and then can’t pay staff on time, get him gone #swfc

@Lewis__1867: How on earth can you not afford to pay players on time, and reject takeover proposals. Bloke is on another planet. #swfc #chansiriout

@andrewbrown5: Dejphon Chansiri, get the fuck out of our club, you turn down 2 offers to buy the club, when you can’t even pay staff wages, you absolute fucking melt !! #swfc #enoughisenough

@MWThrussell: It comes to a point that you have to admit that you don’t have the finances to run a football club. You have allegedly got offers on the table to buy the club, cut your losses, move on and remove the stress from your life Chansiri #swfc

@jonogarnett: Again, and louder for the people at the back, please SELL THE CLUB while we still have one. #swfc

@IngloriousTward: I think enough is enough now and the @EFL absolutely have to do something here.
