Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers vows to play better after awful night against the Chargers

Mike Tomlin was not impressed and neither was Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense had a night to forget after losing 25-10 to the Los Angeles Chargers on SNF.

Rodgers had a completion rate of just 51.6% and threw for 161 yards as the Steelers suffered their third loss in four games.

“This was not my best performance,” he said. “I got to play better than this for us to win. Whatever it takes…if it’s better checks, if it’s better throws, whatever it is, I got to play better. I will. 

“We got to play better on offense, for sure. But this is part of the season. There’s ebbs and flows, there’s ups and downs, and we can’t ride the wave.”

Uh Oh: Steelers HC Mike Tomlin was asked to assess his quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ performance tonight.

Third down was a particular problem for the road team, Rodgers failing to connect on nine straight before finally landing two in garbage time.

“A lot of stuff wasn’t working,” Rodgers added. “We were bad on third down. I was just a little bit off. I missed DK Metcalf early. Could have been a big play, I missed some throws for sure. And then we weren’t getting guys open, I missed some throws I usually make.”

Tomlin chooses not to critique Rodgers’ display

Steelers head coach Tomlin was not impressed when he addressed the media afterwards.

Asked to evaluate Rodgers’ display, he said with a stare: “How would you? Next [question].”

Despite their poor recent run, the Steelers (5-4) remain top of the AFC North, albeit they are now just one game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens.

They host the Cincinnati Bengals next week and Tomlin is expecting a better performance.

He said: ”I don’t need a pat on the back. We stunk it up tonight. We’ll be back.”

Harbaugh pleased with gritty Chargers

Justin Herbert threw for 220 yards and a touchdown for the Chargers, who moved to 7-3 in the AFC West.

They weren’t at their sparkling best but coach Jim Harbaugh was delighted with the win.

“I like wins that are decided by great preparation, great strategy, finesse,” Harbaugh said, “but the best to me are the physical ones, won by heart and grit and guts, and that’s what this one was.

“We’ve just gotten better tackling. It’s been crisper, sharper. Guys just doing their job, not trying to do someone else’s job.”
