Tottenham Hotspur put on a strong start to their new season after grabbing an impressive 2-0 away win against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium. Thomas Frank’s men put on another solid display and picked up their second consecutive win in the league.
Tottenham Beat Man City at Etihad
Despite winning their opening fixture 3-0 against Burnley, Spurs were not the favorites as they take on Pep Guardiola’s men at Etihad this Saturday. Man City looked to discover their rhythm again following a 4-0 thumping over Wolves last weekend.
However, the Citizens’ positive display seems like a distant memory as they were struggling to cope with Tottenham’s pressure. Man City were forced into many defensive errors, which eventually led to both of Spurs’ first-half goals.
The visitor got themselves ahead after 22 minutes through Brenna Johnson’s close-range finish, which had to be checked by VAR. Tottenham’s continuous pressure earned its reward again as Joao Palhinha doubled the lead just before the half-time break.
Man City tried to bounce back after the break, but they continue to struggle offensively and defensively. Guardiola’s men can consider themselves fortunate not to concede more goals in that second half, as City looked lackluster.
It’s certainly an early warning sign for Guardiola, noting that they still need more work to improve from last season’s disappointment. Even the new signings, such as Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, were given a strong lesson this weekend.
