Ivan Juric’s Southampton nearly snatched a rare win midweek, courtesy of Paul Onuachu’s goal, but were denied at the death by Matheus Franca’s header for Crystal Palace. The result extended their winless streak to seven matches.
Sunday could mark a new low in Premier League history: if Southampton lose and Wolves beat Ipswich on Saturday, the Saints will be relegated with seven games remaining.
No club has ever been officially demoted by Gameweek 31.
To make matters worse, Southampton suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat the last time they faced Tottenham and haven’t kept a clean sheet away at Spurs in 15 top-flight visits.
Team news for Tottenham v Southampton
Postecoglou confirmed there were no new injuries from Thursday’s loss to Chelsea.
Micky van de Ven’s late-match cramping isn’t considered serious, and Richarlison could return after a calf injury, having resumed training.
However, Spurs remain without Radu Dragusin (ACL), Dejan Kulusevski (foot), and Kevin Danso (hamstring).
With the Europa League on the horizon, Postecoglou is expected to rotate his squad. That could open the door for more minutes for Sarr, Brennan Johnson, and Mathys Tel, while Heung-min Son might be rested.
For Southampton, Flynn Downes will serve a one-match suspension after collecting his 10th yellow card.
Juan Larios, Ross Stewart, and Will Smallbone remain sidelined, although Smallbone is close to returning.
Onuachu (ankle) is doubtful after being forced off midweek, but Lesley Ugochukwu and Ryan Manning are expected to be available.
