SAN JOSE, Calif. – It has been a whirlwind week for Washington Spirit outside back Kate Wiesner. The 24-year-old is in contention to appear in her first NWSL Championship mere days after receiving her first United States women’s national team call-up.
The Penn State alumnus went seventh overall in the 2024 NWSL College Draft; the final edition of the league’s collegiate draft. The Washington Spirit used its second pick on Wiesner. It is a draft that continues to bear fruit for the team. Players like Croix Bethune, Hal Hershfelt, Courtney Brown, and Makenna Morris (who has since departed to Racing Louisville) joined Weisner in rounding out the Spirit’s talent-laden rookie class. Heather Stainbrook also joined as an undrafted signee.
All six rookies went on to make significant impacts on the team. Thanks in part to their contributions, the Spirit advanced to the NWSL Championship. They, however, met defeat against the Orlando Pride. Wiesner was an unused substitute.
