Jak Crawford sets the pace during post-season test in Abu Dhabi from fellow rookies Paul Aron and Luke Browning

Jak Crawford topped the timesheets for Aston Martin during Tuesday’s post-season test in Abu Dhabi, the F2 racer leading the way from fellow young drivers Paul Aron and Luke Browning.

Just two days on from the 2025 season finale, all 10 teams were back in action at the Yas Marina Circuit for a test session – in conjunction with F1 tyre supplier Pirelli – lasting from 0900 to 1800 local time, with a mix of regular drivers and rookies behind the wheel for each squad.

Amongst those returning to the track was new World Champion Lando Norris, the Briton sporting a dazzling helmet as he joined team mate Oscar Piastri and McLaren reserve driver Pato O’Ward.

There were also debut outings at new teams for Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad, the former in action for Red Bull as he prepares to become Max Verstappen’s team mate in 2026, while Lindblad – his replacement at Racing Bulls – put some mileage in prior to his full-time F1 debut.

A total of 25 drivers took part in the test, with some outfits opting to run three cars – including Haas, whose reserve racer Ryo Hirakawa sparked the only red flag of the session during the morning after an off at Turn 1.

Plenty of laps went in across the board, the highest lap count going to Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli at 157. Esteban Ocon, meanwhile, recorded the lowest for Haas at four, his running having been cut short owing to an engine issue.

But in terms of the times set, it was American racer Crawford – who ended the 2025 Formula 2 season as runner-up to champion Leonardo Fornaroli – that pumped in the quickest lap on a 1m 23.766s, set during the final two hours of the test.

Just 0.081s behind him was Aron. While the Estonian is a reserve driver for Alpine, he was in action for Kick Sauber during the test, the two teams having reached an agreement earlier in the year to share his driving services.

Third was Browning in the Williams, marking his latest outing for the Grove-based squad after previously participating in four Free Practice 1 sessions. Just behind in fourth was Mercedes reserve Fred Vesti – who logged a significant 145 laps – while Ayumu Iwasa was fifth in the Red Bull.

Antonelli, O’Ward and Hirakawa were next in the classification, with F2’s Dino Beganovic ninth for Ferrari ahead of Piastri rounding out the top 10.
