Official Fan Fest

Miami Beach comes alive during race week with a free Official Fan Fest from Wednesday April 29 to Sunday May 3. South Beach

Miami is famed for its white sandy beaches. Of its many ocean-side bay areas, South Beach is perhaps the most renowned. The welcoming palm trees and iconic pastel coloured Art Deco buildings make the South Beach neighbourhood the most photogenic in the city. Be sure to take a stroll down the famous Ocean Drive to check out the best of the Art Deco architecture and the Miami Beach Boardwalk. Head down to the area at night to see the colourful neon signs. Away from the beach itself, you can take some time to relax in South Pointe Park – a beautiful 17-acre park which offers fantastic views of the shoreline from the southernmost tip of the city.

Miami’s Best Beaches

There are plenty of other sandy landscapes to explore away from South Beach. Miami’s beaches stretch along 20 miles of Atlantic coastline. For sporting activities, such as golf, tennis, kiteboarding and paddleboarding, head to Crandon Park – an 800 acre oasis in Key Biscayne, south of Miami Beach. The lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is a great place to take in the beach and coastline views. Hobie Island beach is a favoured sport for windsurfers, while the luxurious Sunny Isles beach is sometimes referred to as “Florida’s Riviera”. The small town of Surfside – complete with its coloured turtle sculptures – has a beach for the whole family to relax on, while North Beach is a quieter affair, perfect for chilling out in the shade of the palm trees. Head to Bayfront Park for a seaside stroll and for plenty of green areas for picnics or exercise.

Shopping in Miami

South Beach is home to many of Miami’s most impressive shopping areas. Lincoln Road Mall stretches ten blocks with some of the best shops in the city. There’s also plenty of pop up street food stands – offering everything from donuts to seafood! The Lincoln Road area is also famous for its street entertainment. Bayside Marketplace, in the heart of Downtown Miami, is the most visited tourist attraction in the city and is home to over 150 shops. When you’re done shopping, check out the views from the top of the 200 foot Skyviews Miami observation wheel. Inspired by Mediterranean villages in Spain and France, the pedestrianized Española Way has many boutique and one-of-a-kind stores. It’s located between 14th and 15th Street in South Beach. You’ll also find plenty of renowned restaurants here and al fresco cocktail bars which are open late.

Miami Design District & Wynwood

Miami is a hotbed of culture and nowhere is this more evident than in the Miami Design District. It’s also another great area to visit for shopping. In the heart of this district is the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami. Meanwhile, the Wolfsonian-FIU is situated in the heart of Miami’s art deco district. The quirky museum, with over 180,000 pieces from the period 1885 to 1945, explores how the past informs the present – and how it can shape the future.

Wynwood, a 20 minute walk south of Miami Design District, is another cool spot to check out. The highlight of this arts district is Wynwood Walls, an urban graffiti art museum. Featuring murals by world famous artists, official tours are available from $15-20 USD. Also in this area are the Rubell Museum, featuring one of the largest contemporary art collections in the country and the ground breaking Superblue Miami, which focuses on digital art.

Where to Eat & Drink in Miami

There’s something to cater to everyone’s palate in Miami. Many of the city’s best eateries can be found in Miami Design District and Wynwood. A particular highlight is Le Jardinier, a vegetable-driven restaurant from Michelin-starred Chef Alain Verzeroli. The health-focussed Pura Vida offers a range of healthy eating options, including superfood smoothies, fresh salads, wraps and more. 

For a taste of Cuba, head to Little Havana. Cafe La Trova, where live music is played by real Trova musicians, appeared in 2021’s list of the 50 best bars in the world. Versailles, with its legendary Cuban sandwiches, prides itself as the ‘World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant’. Also worth checking out is HaSalon in South Beach with its internationally acclaimed Israeli cuisine and MOTEK Aventura, inspired by traditional dishes from Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Yemen and beyond.

Family Fun in Miami

If your trip to Miami is a family affair, there’s plenty to keep the younger members of your party entertained. Set out over four acres of land in the Biscayne Bay area, the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is home to both a planetarium and an aquarium. The Miami Children’s Museum will also keep the kids entertained, with art zones, construction zones and a ‘Castle of Dreams’. The largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, Zoo Miami is the only sub-tropical zoo in the United States. With over 750 acres of land to explore – and more than 500 species of animal, the zoo is spread out into different areas, including the Amazon, Australia and Africa! Dolphins, sea turtles and penguins can be found at Miami Seaquarium in the Biscayne Bay area.

Miami Nightlife

Whether you’re searching for nightclubs, cocktail bars or something more chilled, Miami’s nightlife scene caters to everyone. South Beach and Downtown Miami are the best places to go for the high energy nightclubs. LIV Miami is credited with putting Miami’s nightlife on the map. With regular A-list guests and top international DJs, it is the place to be for a night out in the city. But who said clubbing should be reserved for after dark? E11EVEN, in Downtown Miami, is the world’s only 24/7 ‘Ultraclub’! For more laid back options to nightlife in Miami, try your hand at salsa dancing in Little Havana, or experience the popular Cuban brewery Cerveceria La Tropical in the Wynwood district. Take in views of the Miami skyline from rooftop bars in Downtown Miami – Sugar, on the 40th floor of the EAST Miami hotel is a particular highlight.

Extended Holidays in Florida

If you’re making an extended holiday of your trip to the Miami Grand Prix, there’s lots to check out further afield in Florida. Disney World remains Florida’s top attraction, visited by millions each year. For some, Universal Orlando Resort tops Disney’s offering; its main attraction being the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The two parks are less than 15km away from each other.

Kennedy Space Center, on Florida’s Space Coast, close to Orlando, offers a fascinating insight into America’s space missions. Everglades National Park, the largest tropical wilderness in the United States, is located to the southwest of Miami. You can take a day tour from the city and check out the important ecosystem, which is home to crocodiles, panthers, deer and many other species. For those with a keen interest in motorsport, Daytona International Speedway is north from Miami, while Sebring International Raceway – which once hosted the United States Grand Prix – is located some 250km northwest of Hard Rock Stadium.
