Your Action Plan
What: Your goal is to improve distance control on long putts by increasing the length of your putting stroke while maintaining your natural tempo.
Why: Rushing the stroke in an attempt to add speed results in inconsistent clubhead acceleration and poor contact. A longer, rhythmic stroke ensures a smoother delivery for consistent speed over vast distances.
How:
Maintain Tempo: Keep the same tempo you use on shorter, comfortable putts. Do not speed up the stroke.
Lengthen the Backswing: Instead of a quick jab, make a noticeably longer backswing. The putter should travel much farther back than your normal stroke, potentially reaching your trail leg.
Match the Follow-Through: Allow the follow-through to naturally match the longer backswing.
Feel the Change: You may feel your trail shoulder drop slightly down, which is a natural consequence of the longer, slower stroke.
By increasing the length of the stroke instead of the speed, you will generate the consistent power needed to lag the ball close on long putts.
