Boxing icon Canelo Alvarez thinks Gervonta Davis should have been disqualified during his fight with Lamont Roach Jr.
While ‘Tank’ and Roach delivered an entertaining back-and-forth battle inside the Barclay’s Center in NYC earlier this month. Unfortunately, the otherwise entertaining clash was marred in controversy after Davis inexplicably took a knee during the ninth round before hightailing it to his corner to wipe his face.
The moment caused widespread confusion. Even more confusing was the fact that referee Steve Willis declined to call Davis’ impromptu timeout as a knockdown. Instead, he warned Davis and allowed the fight to continue as if nothing happened.
As a result, Davis won the round 10-9 when in reality, it should have been a 10-8 round for Roach. Furthermore, that 10-8 round for Roach would have been enough for him to walk away with a win, taking Davis’ ‘O’ and his WBA title in the process.

Appearing on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning, Alvarez offered his take on boxing’s latest controversy, believing that Roach should have been awarded a 10-8. ‘Canelito’ also thinks the referee would have been more than justified in DQ’ing Davis for wiping his face during the unauthorized break.
“He take a knee, he needs to lose like 10-8 that round, at least,” Alvarez said. “And plus, the corner go up and they put a towel in the face, that’s a disqualification, for sure. I’m talking about the rules, but, you know, it’s not my business.”
Following the fight, Davis revealed that he had recently gotten his hair done and some of the grease was dripping into his eye. That’s what caused him to turn away and seek the assistance of his corner mid-fight.
Roach Jr. is expected to appeal the decision and recently teased that the result may be overturned, making him a two-division champion.
