As he has displayed all 66 times he has stepped into the ring, Canelo Alvarez packs an incredible punch—and one interviewer got to find that out the hard way.
The Mexican star is a menace between the ropes, securing 39 knockouts of the 62 wins throughout his boxing career. While his most recent knockout win occurred three years ago, the 34-year-old has heavy hands and will likely be searching for a finish in the first outing of his four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh on May 3.
In the build-up to his return to the squared circle, Canelo Alvarez partook in an incredibly unique interview. The rules were simple: Punch the interviewer if Alvarez heard a better boxer than himself.
The interviewer listed several of Alvarez’s past opponents, including Caleb Plant, Edgar Berlanga, and Gennady Golovkin, who were just some of the names presented to the boxing legend.
The first punch came when Dmitry Bivol was mentioned, with Alvarez insisting, ‘On that night, he was better than me.’
After controversially bypassing Oleksandr Usyk, the Guadalajara native found a home for the second punch when Floyd Mayweather’s name surfaced.
Canelo Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather shared the ring over a decade ago, with Mayweather coming out on top with the majority decision.
The third and final punch came when the late great Muhammad Ali was mentioned.

Similar to Mike Tyson, Ali was considered a global treasure and a man who far surpassed the fame of the ring. His stature in the game will forever be on display for future generations, which is why the majority of boxing fans and boxers alike shed praise on him whenever possible.
In search of that type of greatness, Canelo Alvarez makes his return to the ring when he meets the undefeated William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on May 3.
