Carlos Ulberg absolutely sparked Dominick Reyes.
In front of the Aussie faithful, the 205 newcomer put down Dominick Reyes on short time and made his case for getting the winner of Magomed Ankalaev vs. Alex Pereira 2. The main event of UFC Perth ended at just 4:27 of round one and Ulberg moved to 13-1 over all.
Carlos Ulberg: Calm, cool and collected
Despite being in his first main event, Australia’s Carlos Ulberg was calm. Dominick Reyes failed to land anything of meaning against his adversary and paid the price for over committing on a punch. After several kicks traded early on, Ulberg slid out the side as Reyes blitzed and put him down with a massive right hand followed by a bit of ground and pound before the referee saw enough and called the fight.
Ulberg said in his post fight that he’d already talked to Sean Shelby and that he’d likely be in Las Vegas next week for UFC 320 to watch Ankalaev and Pereira rematch.
Carlos Ulberg defended his number three ranking and improved his win streak to 9 straight fights.
In the co-main event, Jimmy Crute beat Ivan Erslan with what was called a rear naked choke but was more like pro wrestling’s camel clutch. Jack Jenkins also returned with a unanimous decision win over Ramon Taveras.
Neil Magny defeated Jake Matthews with some controversy as well. Near the end of round one, Magny was in a guillotine and just before the time expired the referee said Magny was out when he was not. Matthews continued his fight until round three when Magny locked in a poetic D’arce choke and scored the win.
The rest of UFC Perth
Elsewhere on UFC Perth, the Australians reigned largely supreme. Tom Nolan and Charlie Campbell put on a barn burner of a fight despite it only being one round. Campbell pushed the pace and denied Nolan any ground game after low kicks and big punches locked him down. Then Nolan knocked him down and locked in a rear naked choke.
Undefeated prospect Navajo Stirling remained undefeated against Rodolfo Bellato. Cam Rowston defeated Andre Petroski, and Jamie Malarkey defeated Rolando Bedoya. Colby Thicknesse, Michelle Montague, Brando Pericic, and Alexia Thainara also took home wins.
