CM Punk Shares Heartfelt Tribute to Duke Roufus

A significant bond between fighter and coach

In the world of combat sports and professional wrestling, few relationships resonate as deeply as that of a coach and his pupil. Such a connection was on display recently when CM Punk paid tribute to Duke Roufus — the legendary kickboxer-turned-MMA coach who passed away on October 17, 2025, at the age of 55.

Punk (born Phil Brooks) trained under Roufus at what became Roufusport in Milwaukee during his transition into mixed martial arts.

Though Punk’s MMA run was relatively brief, the influence of Roufus left a lasting impact, both personally and professionally.

CM Punk and Duke Roufus

The tribute moment

At the recent event WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Salt Lake City, Punk made a very visible gesture: his entrance attire featured a jacket with “Duke” embroidered on the chest, signifying his homage to Roufus.

He also publicly shared his grief and gratitude:

“Walking up in Japan trying to process the news. It’ll take a while. You made me a better person, coach.” — CM Punk

The tribute comes at a time when Punk is once again in the spotlight, demonstrating how the lessons he learned under Roufus continue to guide him — both inside the ring and out.

Roufus’ legacy and Punk’s journey

Duke Roufus wasn’t just a coach — he was a cornerstone of his gym’s culture, known for taking in fighters and shaping careers across MMA and kickboxing.

Roufusport became a hub for athletes seeking elite coaching, and Punk was among those who walked through its doors.

For Punk, the move into MMA (after his established pro-wrestling career) was bold and challenging. Training under Roufus meant facing steep learning curves, adapting to new disciplines, and embracing a fighter’s mindset. Although his MMA record wasn’t what some hoped, Punk’s commitment reflected the values instilled by Roufus.

Why this tribute matters

Beyond the results: The tribute isn’t about number of wins or losses. It’s about transformation, gratitude, and respect. Punk’s words and gesture indicate Roufus’ impact was far deeper than the fight outcomes.

A bridge between worlds: Punk is primarily known as a wrestling star. His acknowledgment of Roufus — a figure from the MMA world — highlights the interconnectedness of combat disciplines and the mutual respect among practitioners.

Legacy and mentorship: Roufus’ passing reminds us of the human side of coaches — mentors, friends, and life-shapers. Punk’s tribute helps capture that dimension.

Reflection on the moment

The image of a wrestler-turned-fighter wearing a jacket bearing his coach’s name is symbolic. It says: “I haven’t forgotten where I came from.” Training under Roufus, Punk navigated unfamiliar territory. The tribute shows that despite his fame in wrestling, he values the groundwork laid by his coach.

Moreover, it signals to others in the industry — athletes, coaches, fans — that respect and recognition matter. In an era where athletes often move quickly from project to project, Punk’s gesture stands as a reminder: the relationships forged behind the scenes define more than any televised match.

Final thoughts

In paying tribute to Duke Roufus, CM Punk didn’t just honor a coach — he honored a journey. A journey that took him from the wrestling ring to the MMA cage, and now back to the wrestling stage, shaped by someone who believed in him, pushed him, and helped make him a “better person.” As Roufus’ legacy carries on through his gym and his fighters, Punk’s gesture will remain a meaningful chapter in that story.
