UFC veteran Matt Brown doesn’t believe that the UFC White House Card will be the best card ever, as has been promised.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, “The Immortal” doubled down on why he thinks Dana White, Hunter Campbell, and the team will fail to pull off the biggest UFC event ever.
Brown started by stating his belief that the UFC doesn’t have the stars it used to have, and hence, the June 14 card will be a disaster. The 45-year-old also stated that he is sure Conor McGregor won’t be a part of this event, and the UFC is just using his name to promote the card and create more hype. He said:
“They don’t have the stars that they used to have, and Conor’s not fighting on it. I don’t give a f*ck what anybody says. I don’t care what he says. I don’t care what Dana says. They’re using him to promote it and using his name to get it out there… He’s not fighting on that sh*t, bro, and even if that is signed and a done deal, I’m not going to believe it until he is inside the octagon and a punch is thrown. Even on the walkout, I am gonna be like something is going to happen here. When a punch is thrown, I’ll be like ‘All right, I guess he’s fighting.’”
As per reports, the UFC White House card will have 6-7 fights in total, and Brown thinks having such a limited number of bouts for a historic fight night is risky:
“I think that’s a risk to take to only be doing 6-7 fights because you know the sport. You can get 6-7 boring fights real easy. I can’t think of 6-7 fights that are that gigantic.”
Next, “The Immortal” stated that he wants to see a superfight between Jon Jones and Alex Pereira on the South Lawn of the White House, but believes that the bout won’t last long as “Bones” will take “Poatan” down and finish him in a couple of minutes. He added:
“Unless you get Jones and Pereira as the main event, which even then, is it going to be an exciting fight? Is Jones not going to f**king take him down and finish him in a minute or two? Jones is not going to f**k around with him on the feet.””
Matt Brown also weighed in on the shortage of American champions:
“I think the even bigger issue is they can make some pretty significant, good fights but what about Americans? It’s at the White House. That’s the problem, they have so few American [stars]. That’s a problem. Unless they just go ahead and say you know what? F*ck whether it’s American or not, we’ll just make it international, which is what I think you almost have to do, and the UFC is an international sport. I don’t know how much they’re going to care about that or not. Maybe they just make the biggest fights that they can make.” [h/t: MMA Fighting]
As per Merab Dvalishvili, Russian fighters won’t be a part of the UFC White House card, but due to a lack of American champs, Brown wants Islam Makhachev to be part of this event, and Makhachev is game if the UFC allows.
Matt Brown Thinks Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria Will Main Event UFC White House Card
A title unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje is expected to take place on June 14. Both fighters have shown interest in locking horns on that specific date, and Matt Brown believes that fight is bound to happen and could even serve as the UFC White House’s main event. He added:
“Ilia, you know he’s going to be fighting Gaethje on that card [ UFC White House ] for sure. I think that’s pretty much a done deal. That’s probably going to be your main event.”
