Anthony Edwards was shocked to learn his most expensive rookie card sold for $426,000

Avid collectors who just happened to be star athletes like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Bobby Witt Jr. probably have a good sense of how much the highest priced Anthony Edwards rookie cards have sold for on the open market. But for Edwards himself, the most expensive public sale of one of his cards came as a surprise.

“I don’t know. Probably like $100,000,” the Minnesota Timberwolves guard guessed when asked as he drew a crowd at Triple Diamond Sports Cards in Minneapolis on Saturday as part of a Topps Hobby Rip Night event.

Guess higher.

“$200,000.”

A little warmer.

“500,000!”

Close!

Edwards’ most expensive publicly known card sale — a 2020-21 Flawless NBA Logoman patch autographed one-of-one rookie card made by Topps rival Panini — was for $426,000 in an auction via Goldin in June 2022.

“Someone bought that?” a stunned Edwards said. “I appreciate it.”

Coincidentally, Edwards’ second-highest public card sale (via Card Ladder, an online trading card sales database) occurred the night before Edwards’ appearance. That card was a non-autographed one-of-one 2020-21 Panini Flawless NBA Logoman patch card that sold for $252,000 in an auction through Fanatics Premier.

More than 800 hobby shops across the U.S. and 19 other countries participated in the Rip Night festivities, featuring special giveaways and notable appearances. In Arizona, avid collector and three-time American League MVP Mike Trout was also put to the test.

At DNA Cards and Collectibles in Phoenix, Trout was asked which card he would rather have in his collection: the 2024 Topps Chrome Update Paul Skenes MLB Debut Patch autographed card (that sold for $1.1 million early last year) or the 2025 Topps Chrome Shohei Ohtani MVP Gold Logoman patch autographed card (that sold for $3 million in December).

“Oof! I love Skenes, big fan of Skenes. But I’ve got to go with Shohei,” Trout predictably said, given the years he spent alongside Ohtani with the Los Angeles Angels.

Elsewhere on Rip Night, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg bought $7,000 worth of rookie cards of his former Duke teammate and current Charlotte Hornets’ standout Kon Knueppel at a shop in Indianapolis, Star Wars superfan and New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart pulled a 1-of-1 R2D2 sketch card at a shop in New York, and Kansas City Royals star Jac Caglianone treated fans to $5,000 worth of free baseball card packs. Tom Brady and actress Emma Roberts also made appearances at shops in Miami and Atlanta, respectively.

Others participating in Rip Night included Caleb Williams, Corbin Carroll, Bryce Young, Cam Ward, Tyler Shough, Cody Rhodes, Jacob Misorowski, Bryce Underwood, Ozzie Smith, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Randy Orton, Cal Ripken Jr., Liv Morgan and Konnor Griffin.
