Canada Basketball announces men’s, women’s camp rosters for GLOBL JAM

With GLOBL JAM less than a week away, Canada Basketball is one step closer to finalizing its rosters for the under-23 showcase event.

The program announced the training camp rosters for both the men’s and women’s teams on Thursday.

The Canadian squads will open camp from the OVO Athletic Centre this week, with the women’s team starting up on Aug. 6 and the men’s on Aug. 8. Meanwhile, the showcase tournament will take place from Aug. 13-18 at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Canada’s under-23 teams will take on national squads from the United States (Texas Longhorns women, Georgetown Hoyas men), Brazil, Puerto Rico (women), and Japan (men), with all games broadcast live on Sportsnet.

The annual event is set to return for its third iteration following a short one-year hiatus last summer due to the Olympics. GLOBL JAM was conceived as a way to help potential senior team athletes gain FIBA experience to bridge the gap as they try to jump from the top youth level (under-19) to the senior level.

Meanwhile, the women’s squad will be without a trio of notable players who had been previously invited. Syla Swords, Jasmine Bascoe and Agot Makeer will not be on Canada’s roster for GLOBL JAM following a “demanding stretch of international competition,” per a statement by Canada Basketball on Thursday.

Swords helped Canada earn bronze at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile — notably hitting a game-winning shot in double overtime against Argentina — before joining Bascoe and Makeer at the FIBA under-19 women’s basketball world cup in Brno, Czechia, where Canada finished fourth.

“We’re incredibly proud of what Syla, Jasmine and Agot accomplished for Canada this summer,” said Steve Baur, general manager and vice-president of women’s high performance. “Their well-being is our top priority. While Agot won’t be in attendance, we’re excited for Syla and Jasmine to remain part of the GLOBL JAM experience and continue connecting with fans as athlete ambassadors.”

The full training camp rosters for both the Canadian men’s and women’s under-23 rosters are listed below.
