Rockets Prioritize Continuity With Plan A To Develop Within Our Group

The Houston Rockets plan to prioritize roster continuity this offseason following their first-round playoff elimination against the Golden State Warriors, general manager Rafael Stone indicated Tuesday. Stone and head coach Ime Udoka expressed confidence in the team’s young core during their season-ending news conference. The Rockets improved from 22 wins to 41 and then 52 in Udoka’s two seasons at the helm.

“I will give you an inside betting tip that I think continuity is very, very likely,” Stone said. 

Asset Management Key to Houston’s Future

Houston enters the offseason with substantial assets, including nine first-round picks over the next seven years. The front office must decide whether to package some assets for an established veteran or continue developing their young talent.

“Plan A has always been to develop within our group,” said Rafael Stone.

The roster features 2021 No. 2 pick Jalen Green, first-time All-Star Alperen Sengun, 2023 No. 4 pick Amen Thompson, and 2024 No. 3 selection Reed Sheppard. Green struggled in the playoff series, averaging just 8 points on 31% shooting in Houston’s four losses.

Stone emphasized that team owner Tilman Fertitta remains supportive of the current direction. The Rockets will likely extend veteran point guard Fred VanVleet, whose contract includes a $44.9 million team option for 2025-26.

“The goal is to build a championship team, and clearly, we’re not a championship team this year,” Stone said. “I know this is [Fertitta’s] favorite team he’s ever had. He also has an opportunity to be around our guys day in and day out. They’re good guys, and I think he appreciates them not just for the players they are, but the people they are.”

“I think we’re on a very solid trajectory,” Stone continued. “But just because you’ve done it in the past doesn’t mean that you’re guaranteed to do it in the future. So, we have to continue to put in the work.”

Udoka believes the playoff experience against Golden State will benefit his young team moving forward.

“Next time we’re in the playoffs, it’s hit the ground running from Game 1, not take a step back,” said Udoka. “I think our guys will be better for it, no doubt.”

“I look at all of these guys like my baby brothers, except for they’re not babies anymore,” VanVleet said. “They grew up a lot this year and made huge strides. It’s one of my favorite seasons that I’ve been a part of, and I think everyone should be excited about the future and what’s to come.”
