The sale of the Connecticut Sun is “not quite at the finish line yet” and the team will play in Connecticut for next season, Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti confirmed on Sunday.
Rizzotti’s comments come after news broke that a group lead by Steve Pagliuca is set to buy the team with an eye towards moving it to Boston.
“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feelings from our fans based on the news that we’ll be here next year,” Rizzotti said. “I know there’s still uncertainty about the future, but our loyal fans, they’re excited to be able to watch this team grow and get into Year Two of this retooling of the roster and see where we can go. And if it ends up being our last year here, we’re going to make sure we blow it out.”
The sale still needs the approval of both the WNBA and the league’s governors.
The Mohegan Tribe purchased the franchise in 2003 from Orlando and reolcated the team to Uncasville. The Sun are one of a few teams in the league without a dedicated practice facility, and play in an arena that holds just under 9000 fans.
The Boston Globe also reported that the WNBA may force the team to sell to a Connecticut-based group as it prefers an expansion team in Boston in 2033.
