Arizona Wildcats head coach Tommy Lloyd is going to have an interesting offseason.
There’s a world in which he gets to boast about taking his team to the Final Four, beating the world-beater Michigan Wolverines and winning the whole NCAA Tournament. Even if Arizona loses to Michigan or beats the Wolverines and loses to either UConn or Illinois, Lloyd and the Wildcats have had an impressive season.
There’s also a world in which any of the above scenarios play out, and Lloyd finds himself as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in short order. The Tar Heels recently fired Hubert Davis, and there are rumors linking Lloyd, 51, to the job.
North Carolina is one of the biggest brands not just in college basketball, but in sports in general, so it does make sense why a rising-star coach like Lloyd might take that gig over what he has at Arizona.
Lloyd was asked about those rumors at a recent Final Four news conference, and he declined to talk about his future.
“I’m a simple guy. I’m kind of just one thing at a time. I’m not a multitasker,” Lloyd said Thursday. “You can ask my wife. So, I’m 100% locked in on Arizona basketball right now, and I’m excited to see what this team can do. I have a real strong belief in this team and this team deserves my full attention, so that’s what I’m giving.”
