On Sunday, Georgia Tech became the second power-conference men’s basketball program to fire its head coach, as the Yellow Jackets parted ways with Damon Stoudamire.
Last month, the Kansas State Wildcats let go of head coach, Jerome Tang, and more major-conference head coaches are expected to be fired soon, as teams that won’t be dancing in March conclude their 2025-26 campaigns.
Stoudamire, in his three seasons at Georgia Tech, went 42-55 overall and 19-39 in Atlantic Coast Conference competition. This season, Georgia Tech was a woeful 11-20 overall and finished dead last in the ACC standings.
Former Mercer head coach Greg Gary, a quality-control analyst at Georgia Tech, will serve as the Yellow Jackets’ interim head coach, the squad announced on Sunday.
Five coaches who would make sense at Georgia Tech
Casey AlexanderHead coach, Belmont Bruins2025-26 record: 26-6 overall, 16-4 in Missouri Valley ConferenceThe Bruins looked like a good bet to make the 2026 NCAA Tournament, although they were upset in their first MVC Tournament contest. Still, Alexander has done a great job at Belmont, which is located in Nashville, Tenn., only about four hours from Atlanta.
Bryan HodgsonHead coach, South Florida Bulls2025-26 record: 22-8 overall, 14-3 in American ConferenceIn his first season as South Florida’s head coach, Hodgson has led the Bulls to the American Conference regular-season title. Hodgson is an excellent recruiter, and he will be a hot commodity in the offseason coaching carousel.
Gerry McNamaraHead coach, Siena Saints2025-26 record: 21-11 overall, 13-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic ConferenceMcNamara is doing wonders at Siena. The season before he arrived, the Saints won four games. In his first campaign there, Siena got to 14 victories before eclipsing 20 triumphs this campaign. Plus, McNamara was a former long-time assistant coach with the Syracuse Orange, so he has familiarity with Georgia Tech’s league, the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Josh SchertzHead coach, Saint Louis Billikens2025-26 record: 27-4 overall, 15-3 in Atlantic 10 ConferenceThe No. 25 Billikens won a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season championship, and Schertz is expected to be among the most sought-after head coaches this offseason. Before joining Saint Louis, he went 66–40 in three years at Indiana State. Schertz will likely get offered higher-profile opportunities than Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets brass should still call him.
Tony SkinnHead coach, George Mason Patriots2025-26 record: 23-8 overall, 11-7 in Atlantic 10 ConferenceOn Saturday at home, George Mason crushed Saint Louis, 86-57. That was a tremendous win for Skinn and his Patriots, although they have work to do in the Atlantic 10 Tournament to possibly land a bid to the Big Dance. Still, Skinn’s name will come up in head coaching searches this offseason. Skinn has good power-conference experience, having previously served as an assistant coach at Seton Hall, Ohio State and Maryland.
