We’ve hit the holiday break for most teams around the county, but last week saw several peak performances as some were bringing non-conference play to a close and others were getting into the conference slate.
This week’s five nominees for Women’s Player of the Week are the following: New Hampshire guard Eva DeChent, Richmond forward Maggie Doogan, Marshall guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey, Siena guard Francesca Schiro and Maine forward Adrianna Smith.
Eva DeChent, New Hampshire
DeChent averaged 27.5 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game to lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 week. The junior guard hit two free throws in the final 10 seconds to help seal UNH’s 69-66 win over Central Connecticut State. She finished the game with 33 points and seven rebounds. She then posted 22 points, another seven rebounds and seven assists in a dominant 74-38 win over Dartmouth.
Doogan is a finalist for player of the week once again after leading the Spiders to a 3-0 week. She averaged 23.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and five assists per game while shooting 55.6% from the field over the three games. The forward closed the week with a career-high 30 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead Richmond to a 70-54 win over Penn State to close out the 4 Tha Culture Holiday Classic. The day before, she had 15 points and seven rebounds in a 72-58 win over Alabama A&M. The Broomall, Pa., native opened the week with a double-double of 26 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals in an 81-45 blowout of Bethune Cookman. She shot 9-of-13 in the game.
Timaya Lewis-Eutsey, Marshall
Lewis-Eutsey averaged 25.5 points per game as the Thundering Herd opened Sun Belt play 2-0. The senior set a career-high with 31 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor and 9-for-10 from the line in a 75-62 win over App State. The Trenton, N.J., native then netted 20 points and dished out seven assists with four steals in Marshall’s 83-74 overtime win over James Madison. She has scored 20+ points in three straight games and leads the SBC with 3.4 steals per game.
Schiro averaged 22.7 points, five assists and four steals while shooting 50% (25-50) to lead the Saints to a 3-0 week. The freshman poured in a career-high 32 points with six steals in Siena’s 107-69 MAAC-opening win at Niagara. She then had 14 points and four assists in a 73-56 win at Canisius. The Hillsborough, N.J., product opened the week with 22 points and career-highs of eight assists and six rebounds in a 94-56 win over Central Connecticut.
Smith came up with 21 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the Black Bears’ 59-57 win over Harvard on Sunday. She hit the game-winning layup at the buzzer to secure the win. The senior forward is the only player in the nation to average at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists per game.
