It has been a rough offseason for Notre Dame football’s secondary, and on Friday, the first day that the transfer portal window opened, another opted to leave the program.
Freshman cornerback Cree Thomas, who played in three game this fall, will move on from the program after just one season in South Bend. The 6-foot, 1-inch and 187-pound Arizona native signed just over a year ago just didn’t see a path to playing time.

The Irish secured one of the nation’s best 2026 secondary classes, and Thomas very well might have seen the writing on the wall. Other younger players like Mark Zackery and Dallas Golden got much more early playing time as well.
It’s an unfortunate loss, but it’s now become the norm in college football, as players who can’t see the field early often opt to move on from their programs looking for other opportunities. We wish Cree the best as he looks for a team that fits his needs better.
