Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich easily saw off their Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 first leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
Much was made of Leverkusen’s fine record against Bayern under Xabi Alonso before the game, but Vincent Kompany’s men ultimately cruised.
Kane put them ahead early on and late converted a penalty after Jamal Musiala punished a sloppy goalkeeping error.
Leverkusen managed just a single shot on target as they were left needing something akin to a miracle in the second leg next week.
It took Bayern less than nine minutes to take the lead, with the goal coming from an unsurprising source.
Michael Olise delivered from the right and Kane guided a header into the left side of the net – that was his ninth headed goal in the Champions League, a total only Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema (13 each) have bettered since the English striker’s debut in the competition.
Leverkusen initialy had opportunities to draw level, the best of which spurned by Jeremie Frimpong.
The Dutchman pounced on a Dayot Upamecano error, but Manuel Neuer – who became just the fourth player in Champions League history to record 150 starts – came to Bayern’s rescue.
Bayern were gifted a second goal early in the second half as Matej Kovar spilled a cross and allowed Musiala to score from close range with his 17th strike of the season, making it already the best campaign of his career.
And any hopes of a Leverkusen comeback on the night were pretty much extinguished when Nordi Mukiele was shown his second yellow just past the hour for catching Kingsley Coman.
There was still time for things to get worse, however.
Edmond Tapsoba wrestled Kane to the ground in the area to concede a penalty, from which the former Tottenham star scored, giving Xabi Alonso’s men a mountain to climb in the second leg.
