The presence of a head coach like Bill Belichick is expected to do a lot for the North Carolina Tar Heels on the recruiting trail.
After all, the Tar Heels can simply out up a picture of each of Belichick’s six Super Bowl trophies that he won as head coach of the New England Patriots. Or how about displaying his eight total Super Bowl rings that he won (two as defensive coordinator as the New York Giants)?
Belichick is the draw for players to come to North Carolina, but sometimes things just aren’t a good fit.
That’s apparently the case for 2026 three-star quarterback Zaid Lott from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Lott had been committed to UNC since June 2024, and he stayed committed after Mack Brown was fired and Belichick was hired to replace him.
Now it seems as if he’s looking for something new, though, because he announced his decommitment on Tuesday.
“After much reflection, I have decided to forgo my commitment to the University of North Carolina,” he wrote. “This choice was tough, but I believe it’s the best step for my future. I’m grateful for the support and understanding from everyone involved. I’m excited for what comes next.”
