Although statistically not a world setter during his freshman season, the expectation for Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway in 2025 is leading the SEC program back to its late 2000s glory.
A former five-star mega prospect across all recruiting sites, Lagway received significant snaps as a true freshman last season, starting five of the team’s final six games following an ACL tear to incumbent starter Graham Mertz. Lagway finished the season 115-of-192 for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns against nine interceptions. He also ran 51 times for 101 yards.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Lagway is among the leaders to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy Award. Much of the dual-threat passer’s success will undoubtedly come from a revamped Florida roster, especially with the offensive line. Lagway has a firm grasp on the importance of the offensive line, going above and beyond for his front five.
On Friday, Spurrier’s Gridiron Grill gave Lagway a shoutout on Facebook after the gunslinger treated Florida’s offensive line to a meal at the restaurant named after former Gators national championship-winning head coach Steve Spurrier.
Lagway’s commitment to serving his teammates did not go unnoticed by the Florida faithful, with many fans applauding the signal-passer for his actions.

“He’s a leader of men,” wrote one fan after Lagway took his teammates to dinner.
“That’s my quarterback,” implied a second.
“This cannot be taught,” pointed out another.
“It’s so wholesome how much you support your brother and love the Gators,” added another.
Florida will open the season with non-conference games against LIU and South Florida before facing the LSU Tigers on the road.
