The entirety of the college football world wants to discuss current Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin and his future in the industry.
It’s not a bad future, either. Kiffin is the top target for two big-time SEC jobs because of the work he’s done at Ole Miss. The Florida Gators are going all out to try to get him as a replacement for Billy Napier, and the LSU Tigers are doing the same thing as they look to replace Brian Kelly.
In the meantime, Ole Miss would certainly like it if Kiffin stayed in Oxford. So, there are at the very least three programs and three fan bases watching this play out with bated breath.
Kirby Smart avoids discussing Lane Kiffin
In the meantime, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart was asked in a recent SEC teleconference what his thoughts were on coaches fielding other opportunities while at the same time trying to run their own program. Keep in mind that Ole Miss is 10-1 and ranked No. 6 in all of college football. The Rebels are in the midst of a wonderful run, but this Kiffin “stuff” has an opportunity to be a distraction.
Speaking of, Smart wisely took the question and shot it down. Getting into the middle of this could also cause a distraction for his team, so he wanted nothing to do with the question.
“I mean, you’re asking me to comment on something that I wouldn’t be the expert of, I don’t want to be the expert of, and I don’t have room in my head to consume that information and process it. To each his own is all I could tell you,” Smart said, according to On3.
That’s a veteran coaching move by Smart, who is also in a College Football Playoff chase of his own. The Bulldogs are 9-1 and ranked No. 4 in the country after beating the Texas Longhorns this past weekend. Smart is certainly asking his team to be focused, so he’s wise to practice what he’s preaching in that regard.
