Virginia Tech loses four-star QB commit after official visit

It’s not uncommon for players who have already committed to change their minds when there’s a regime change at a school, and that’s exactly what new head coach James Franklin and the Virginia Tech Hokies are dealing with in the case of four-star quarterback Cole Bergeron from Lafayette, La.

That’s not to say the Hokies don’t have a plan, though. According to Hunter Shelton of Rivals, Virginia Tech is the current favorite to land former four-star quarterback Troy Huhn from San Marcos, Calif. He had committed to Penn State under Franklin and decommitted when Franklin was let go in Happy Valley.

The Hokies then turned around and offered Huhn on the day Franklin was hired, and he took an official visit a few days later. Huhn is Franklin’s preferred quarterback recruit, and it’s worth noting that Bergeron had committed under the previous Virginia Tech regime.

Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that the Hokies have lost Bergeron’s commitment. It is certainly noteworthy, though, because he’s one of the top quarterback recruits in the country. It’s also notable because Bergeron had just taken an official visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend.

You don’t often hear about recruits taking official visits and then decommitting. Usually, it’s the other way around.
