Baylor Football secured its first commitment for the 2027 recruiting class on Saturday, as rising safety Davontrae Kirkland, a four-star prospect and Waco University High standout, pledged to stay home and wear the green and gold.
Kirkland announced his commitment live on Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, giving the Bears an incredible start to the Class of 2027.
A composite four-star prospect according to 247Sports and Rivals, Kirkland is rated No. 91 nationally by Rivals and No. 251 overall by On3’s Industry Rankings. He’s also the No. 26 safety and No. 37 junior in Texas.
As a sophomore, he tallied 83 tackles, five pass breakups, one interception, and a forced fumble, adding up over 110 tackles through two seasons. At 6‑foot‑1 and 180 lb, Kirkland offers immediate athleticism and versatility in the secondary—an early asset for head coach Dave Aranda’s defense.
He cited a long-standing relationship with Baylor’s coaching staff—dating back to seventh grade—and the family atmosphere that made him feel “already part of the family.”
In a conference defined by explosive offenses, Kirkland’s arrival adds depth and speed to the Bears’ secondary. His local roots align with Baylor’s recruiting philosophy under Aranda, forming a strong nucleus of in-state talent heading into 2027.
If he continues trending upward, Kirkland could emerge as a centerpiece of Baylor’s defensive future.
