Texas AD Chris Del Conte had time today, and he used it to absolutely dunk on Desmond Howard.
After Howard got on camera and suggested the Texas job was going to open up at the end of the season due to a “mutual parting of ways,” Del Conte hopped on X and lit that trash take on fire. “This is news to me… Thanks for the insight 🫵🏽🤦🏽♂️,” he posted in response to the video. That’s it. No backlash, no long explanation. Just enough sarcasm to let the world know he’s not buying whatever Des is selling.
Howard, who’s made a habit of saying things that barely make sense on a good day, was clearly trying to stir the pot. There’s been some buzz around Steve Sarkisian possibly looking at NFL jobs, sure. But to act like the Texas gig is just going to quietly become available in some peaceful breakup? Come on. That’s not how it works in Austin, and it’s definitely not how it ends when the coach is still under contract with a program that prints money and expects titles.
Sarkisian hasn’t had a perfect season, but the Longhorns are still a name brand with one of the strongest rosters in the country. This isn’t some panic move in the works. Sark has been linked to the NFL before, and maybe there’s something to that down the road. But what Desmond Howard tossed out there wasn’t reporting. It was lazy speculation dressed up like insider info.
If Texas does make a move, it won’t be because Desmond Howard saw it coming. It’ll be because the program decided on its own timeline. Until then, it’s safe to say Del Conte has zero patience for talking heads treating the Texas job like some gossip column filler.
Next time Des wants to break news, maybe he should try checking with someone who actually works in the building first.
