SALT LAKE CITY — After enduring what he called “probably the worst beating I’ve ever had, except for when my mama whooped me as a kid,” Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders had some hard words for his team after a 53-7 loss to the Utah Utes.
“All this hoop-hall, this ya-ya, and all this want to look good, and all this stuff, it doesn’t work unless you’re ballin’,” Sanders said. “We’re in that kind of generation right now. Everybody wants to look good, and they want to get paid, but you’ve got to ball. You’ve got to play. That constitutes that, and we’ve got to figure this out now.”
Colorado suffers worst loss of season in Week 9
Since Sanders arrived in Boulder, Colorado has been in the national spotlight and has drawn the attention of plenty of high-profile talent for the man known as Coach Prime. However, with the Buffs now 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play, it’s clear that this team has taken a step back without quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter on the team.
With both of them in the NFL, Coach Prime has seen his team struggle this season … but nothing like what happened late on Saturday night during Utah’s homecoming. Utah rolled up 422 yards on the ground and posted 587 yards of total offense while limiting the Buffs to 140 total yards.
The majority of Colorado’s yardage came in the second half, with Utah in command of the game. While building up a 43-0 halftime lead, Colorado was stymied, finishing the first half with -18 yards on 33 plays.
“We didn’t do our jobs. We didn’t prepare our kids profoundly,” Sanders said, pointing some of the blame at himself and the coaching staff. “They blitzed us to death. They’re blitzing us right now and we’re inside.”
