Former state-champion Bergen Catholic quarterback Steve Angeli is transferring to Syracuse, where he’ll be reunited with another prominent Bergen Catholic name.
Nunzio Campanile, who coached the Bergen Catholic program from 2010-17 and won a state title in his final season at the helm, is the Orange’s quarterbacks coach. The head coach is Fran Brown, a former Camden High School star who coached at Paul VI in 2010 before jumping to the college ranks.
Angeli, who led the Crusaders to the Non-Public A state championship back in 2021, spent the first three years of his college career as the backup QB at Notre Dame. He announced last week that he was entering the transfer portal.
Angeli announced his transfer to Syracuse on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday night.
His most notable moment at Notre Dame came in last year’s Orange Bowl when he completed 6 of 7 passes for 44 yards, leading the Fighting Irish into the red zone to kick a 41-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Those were the first points of the game for Notre Dame, which came back in the second half to beat Penn State, 27-24, and advance to the national championship game.
Angeli’s only college start came in the 2023 Sun Bowl, when he completed 15 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns as Notre Dame beat Oregon State, 40-8.
Angeli should contend for the starting job at Syracuse. Last year’s starter, Kyle McCord, is expected to be selected in the NFL Draft later this week.
