Kansas coach Bill Self will not be acting as head coach tonight for the Jayhawks matchup against Colorado after suffering some health issues that got him admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He released a statement noting that assistant coach Jacque Vaughn will take over for the Jayhawks while he’s recovering.
“I’m feeling much better, and I want to thank the well-wishers and the great team at LMH Health,” Self said. “I’ll be sitting out tonight’s game, and as I’ve said before, we have an elite coaching staff at KU, and I know our players are in good hands in Boulder. Jacque Vaughn will serve as the acting head coach tonight. He will rely on our great group of coaches, Jeremy Case, Kurtis Townsend, Joe Dooley, and Tony Bland, throughout the game to lead the team.”
Self was reportedly hospitalized on Monday out of caution and did not travel to Boulder with the team. He was apparently feeling “under the weather” before being taken to LMH Health, where he received IV fluids.
Unfortunately for both Self and the Jayhawks, this isn’t his first time dealing with a health scare. In 2023, Self notably missed the Big 12 Tournament and the NCAA Tournament after being hospitalized with chest pain. According to ESPN, Self underwent a heart catheterization and had two stents placed for the treatment of blocked arteries.
Then, in July, Self had a vague hospitalization tied to “some concerning symptoms,” according to Kansas’ official statement. He underwent another procedure and had two stents inserted.
While Self recovers, the Jayhawks will be in good hands with Vaughn. They tip off against Colorado at 10:00 p.m. Central on ESPN.
