Should the Texas Longhorns just kiss their hopes of upsetting the Vanderbilt Commodores goodbye?
On Monday, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed starting quarterback Arch Manning is in concussion protocol. In overtime of a 45-38 comeback win over Mississippi State, the sophomore passer exited after taking a big hit on a scramble. Backup QB Matthew Caldwell subsequently replaced him and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Emmett Mosley V.
Sarkisian said they will receive another update on Manning later this week. Until then, Caldwell is preparing to start in Saturday’s home game against No. 9 Vanderbilt (7-1, 3-1 SEC) at noon ET on ABC.
Can Texas beat Vanderbilt without Arch Manning?
Manning hasn’t looked like a future No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft this season, but he has gradually improved. In eight games, he has completed 60.9% of his passes for 1,795 yards, 15 TDs and six interceptions. Against Mississippi State, he threw for a season-high 346 passing yards.
