The college basketball transfer portal is open and players are entering it left and right, including players who insisted they never would. BYU point guard Robert Wright III has hit the portal, with multiple reports coming on Wednesday morning. And this news came just weeks after BYU’s season-ending loss to Texas, where he said, “If I’m in a college jersey, I’ll be attending BYU for sure”
Here’s the video.
Now, things change. We get that. But whether or not this is legitimate, a negotiating ploy, or something else, remains to be seen. Unfortunately, loyalty is out the window in college athletics. And while I don’t blame anyone for looking out for themselves, the transactional nature of college athletics is certainly something that is still taking some time for fans to get adjusted to.
Wright averaged 18.1 points and 4.6 assists per game and shot 41% from three-point range this past season. He showed major improvement from his freshman season at Baylor, when he averaged 11.5 points per game and 4.2 assists per game.
BYU finished the season 23-12 with a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, falling as a 6-seed against First Four team Texas. The Cougars’ season came up short of expectations, and it began when star Richie Saunders went down with a season-ending injury.
