MADISON – As the Wisconsin football team continued to bolster its defensive line through the transfer portal came news on Jan. 8 that one of its key players for the upcoming season planned to transfer.
Charles Perkins, a 6-foot-2, 323-pound defensive tackle, plans to enter the transfer portal. That was the word delivered to CBS Sports by his agent, a report Perkins reposted on is X account.

The loss would be significant for the Badgers. Perkins, who will be a redshirt senior during the 2026 season, missed four games due to injury and finished with six tackles that included two stops for a loss in eight games.
Though Perkins’ stats are modest, he was one of the top performers on the line during spring practice. He along with rising junior Dillan Johnson were expected to be the top two returners on the defensive line.
Around he same time as the announcement Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell provided an update on the status of the roster for the upcoming season.that would seem to go counter to Perkins’ plan.
“Everybody that was currently on our roster that isn’t in the transfer portal I think is signed,” Fickell said Jan.8.

Quality interior defensive linemen are in high demand. Wisconsin has added two during this portal cycle: Buffalo’s Junior Poyser and West Virginia Hammond Russell and it might add more players at that position.
