The Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to hire Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
McCarthy spent five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before he and the organization failed to reach a contract extension after the 2024 season, leading to the Cowboys’ hiring of Brian Schottenheimer.

McCarthy posted a 49-35 regular-season record in Dallas but was just 1-3 in the playoffs. He won six NFC North titles between 2006 and 2018 with the Green Bay Packers.
McCarthy, 62, replaces Mike Tomlin, who walked away from the job earlier this month after spending 19 seasons with the Steelers.
McCarthy won a title with the Packers in the 2010-11 season when they defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. He brings that title experience to Pittsburgh, which last won a Lombardi Trophy to cap off the 2008 season under Tomlin.
McCarthy has led teams to the playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons as an NFL head coach, with an 11-11 postseason record and eight division titles. His 174 career wins are 13th in NFL history.
Coincidentally, McCarthy’s quarterback in Green Bay was Aaron Rodgers, who spent this past season with the Steelers, although his future in Pittsburgh is unclear.
