Washington Capitals GM on Alex Ovechkin’s future
Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff: The 40-year-old Alex Ovechkin could hit 30 goals again this season. He’s in the last year of his contract, and there is lots of speculation about his future. Washington Capitals GM Chris Patrick was on The Sheet with Jeff Marek, and they talked about Ovechkin’s future.
“It’s hard to handicap a percentage chance, but I think that’s definitely a possibility. You know, he has a process that he wants to go through. There are conversations he wants to have, both with his family and with his advisors, with (team owner Ted Leonosis), with (Capitals president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan), and with me.
He’s not going to rush to do it, he’s going to do it on his timeline, and if that ends up being as we get towards the end of the season or if it spills into the offseason, I think he’s going to do the process the way he wants to do it and we certainly are going to respect that.”
NHL Injuries Updates: Monday the 23rd
The Detroit Red Wings didn’t want to move any of their top prospects, even if it meant landing a top center
Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff: The Detroit Red Wings are in a playoff battle. What if they miss the playoffs again under Steve Yzerman and his staff. There hasn’t been any indication that their futures are in jeopardy, but the rebuild is nearing 10 years.
Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp are their top two centers, and both have been injured lately.
Prior to the trade deadline, they were one of the teams interested in St. Louis Blues center Robert Thomas. One executive, who had some trade talks with the Red Wings, said that the Wings weren’t interested in moving top prospects in any trades – center Nate Danielson and goaltenders Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine.
NHL Rumors: What ‘Core’ Should the Vancouver Canucks Keep?
The Blues wanted the equivalent of four first-round picks for Thomas. The Red Wings had the assets to do it. If the Red Wings offered up a first, Danielson and one of Cossa or Augustine, the Blues would have had to consider it. Thomas is what the Red Wings need. Cossa will likely be John Gibson backup next season, but Augustine could be stuck in the minors for a couple of seasons.
