MELBOURNE, Australia — World No. 1s Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka booked their spots in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday afternoon, as did Daniil Medvedev, who stormed from two sets and a break of serve down to advance to the round of 16, and American fan favourite Coco Gauff.
It was also a victorious day for Australia’s top-ranked Alex de Minaur, who crushed American Frances Tiafoe in straight sets to advance to the fourth round at his home Grand Slam for the fifth successive year.
Yesterday, Naomi Osaka stole the show with a hard-fought win over veteran Sorana Cirstea, but it was the extra-curriculars which made the headlines. The Japanese star has since apologised to her rival.
Tomorrow, on day seven, matches will begin an hour earlier as temperatures are expected to hit 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit). There is also a serious risk play could be suspended under the tournament’s heat policy.
