Good News for Medvedev, as ATP Rescinds “Best Effort” Code Violation – Tennis Now

Victories have been hard to come by for Daniil Medvedev in 2025. He’s lost a lot of matche, lost his coach, and lost his head at times. But the former world No.1 gained an apology from the ATP Tour after the powers that be ruled that the best effort warning he was given during his loss to Learner Tien was an error.

Tennis Now’s Richard Pagliaro gave a full report of the initial controversy here

Medvedev made headlines when he asked “why is every referee in the world trying to intimidate me?” after umpire Adel Nour gave the Russian a code violation for not giving his “best effort” while he was cramping during the third set of his loss to the American.

Rules state that “A player shall use his best efforts during the match when competing in a tournament. Violation of this section shall subject a player to a fine up to $40,000 for each violation.”

On Thursday the ATP rescinded the warning and stated that Medvedev will not be subject to fine.

It seems like the umpires have been making more headlines since their roles have been made almost redundant in the sport. Daniil Medvedev is the latest (repeat) victim of over-umpiring (as he was in New York).

That’s great news for Medvedev, who was fined $42,500 for outbursts during his first-round loss to Benjamin Bonzi at the US Open.

Yeah, it’s been that kind of year for the Russian, who is currently ranked 18.

29-year-old Medvedev is 30-20 overall on the season. The 2021 US Open champion has spent 16 total weeks at No.1 and reached an additional five major finals over the course of his illustrious career. He owns a 61-17 lifetime record at the hard court majors, and has the final in six of his 18 appearances in those majors.
