Swiatek Will Drop Out of Top 2 for the First Time Since March of 2022

Iga Swiatek’s tennis has not been the same this spring, as she has failed to win a title on the surface heading into Roland-Garros for the first time since 2020. Her ranking won’t be the same come Monday.

The former World No.1 is set to fall outside of the Top-2 for the first time in 165 weeks (since March 21, 2022) when Monday’s new rankings are released. She’ll be no higher than No.4, and could fall to No.5, depending on what happens with Jasmine Paolini in Rome next week.

That spells trouble for Swiatek’s seeding in Paris, where she could now face Aryna Sabalenka as early as the semifinals, and potentially the quarterfinals, if she ends up at No.5 next week.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will be ranked at No.2 and No.3, not necessarily in that order, next week.

Of the last 165 weeks inside the Top 2, Swiatek has spent 125 of them as No.1, but she has been looking up at Aryna Sabalenka since the end of last year’s US Open.

It’s not the end of the world for Swiatek, who won her maiden Slam title at Roland-Garros unseeded and with a ranking of No.54, but it’s a sign of her recent struggles.

“For sure it hasn’t been easy,” she said after falling to Danielle Collins 6-1, 7-5 on Saturday to fall to 21-3 lifetime at the Foro Italico. “For sure I’m doing something wrong. So I need to just regroup and change some stuff. I had some advice from the team. I’ll just try to do this.”

Asked if she gets a different feeling when she arrives in Paris, where she is 35-2 lifetime with four titles, including triumphs at the last three stagings, she said:

“It doesn’t matter what things I get. Every year is different, so… Doesn’t matter.”
