Jonathan Smith’s recruiting continues to be hotter than Michigan temperatures in June.

Michigan State football picked up its 16th commitment of the month Tuesday, June 24, with a pledge from Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s Samson Gash. The three-star wide receiver chose the Spartans over offers from West Virginia, Cincinnati, Alabama, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue and others.

Smith now has 20 players committed for his 2026 recruiting class. The early-signing period is in December.

Gash’s brother, Caleb, is a third-year sophomore defensive back for the Spartans. Their father, Sam, played in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl with Baltimore as a fullback, and coached for the Lions from 2007-12. A third Gash brother, Isaiah, played at Michigan from 2020-22.

Samson Gash is rated the No. 154 wide receiver and No. 984 player overall in 247Sports’ composite rankings. The 6-foot, 180-pound wideout showed versatility with 42 catches for 731 yards and 13 touchdowns along with 347 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground while also serving as the Shamrocks’ return man and playing defensive back.

Gash also won the Division 1 state 100-meter dash May 31, his first spring back in track after missing the past two seasons due to hip injuries from football.

In addition to Gash, three-star Cass Tech offensive lineman Khalief Canty Jr. is scheduled to make his decision between MSU, Missouri and Pittsburgh at the Rivals Five-Star Camp in Indianapolis. Canty told Rivals in a video interview Monday night that he committed to Missouri but later posted on Instagram that he would make his choice Tuesday night, with a number of Spartan players – including Aidan Chiles, Nick Marsh and Jalen Thompson – flooding social media to sway him.
