The nominees for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, best U21 player, keeper, coach and club awards have officially been announced.

The Ballon d’Or winner is selected through a two-stage process: France Football and L’Equipe journalists create a 30-player shortlist, then one journalist from each of the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations votes, assigning points (15 to 1) to their top 10.

The player with the most points wins; ties are broken by first-place votes, then second-place, and so on. Lionel Messi holds the record with eight wins, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with five. The women’s Ballon d’Or, started in 2018, uses a similar process but with 50 journalists voting.

It has been won twice by Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, and once by Ada Hegerberg and Megan Rapinoe.

There are eight players who currently play in the Premier League up for the Ballon d’Or this year with Liverpool having the most.

Those includes Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Erling Haaland and Prem new boy Viktor Gyokeres and Florian Wirtz.

The Premier League tweeted following the announcement:

“A third Premier League season full of goals for Erling Haaland”

“Viktor Gyokeres brings his goalscoring talents to the Premier League”

“Alexis Mac Allister a star performer in Liverpool’s incredible Premier League winning campaign”

“Cole Palmer, he just keeps getting colder”

“Declan Rice, a midfield maestro with some HUGE moments last season for Arsenal”

“Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s leader. Dominant in defence.”

“Mo Salah, Premier League winner. Player of the Season. Top goalscorer. Most assists. What more can be said about his iconic 2024/25 season?”

“Florian Wirtz, ready to light up the stage at Liverpool.”

“Nominated among the best managers in the world 🌍 Congratulations to Arne Slot and Enzo Maresca! #BallonDor”

BBC Sport write: “It probably comes as no surprise, but there is no space on the list for England duo Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is now a Real Madrid player, or Bukayo Saka who may feel slightly aggrieved to miss out despite an injury ravished end to the 2024-25 campaign.

“And, despite being the one positive in a dreadful season for Man Utd, Bruno Fernandes isn’t on the list either.”
