Timberwolves have considered signing two ex-New York Knicks, another player is ‘front-runner’

The Minnesota Timberwolves are considering bringing two former New York Knicks players to fill in the vacant spot in their backcourt.

Mike Conley started 64 of the 71 games he played last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves and was also the starting point guard in the playoffs.

However, 37-year-old Conley, does not really have a lot of years left in his tank and is also on the final year of his contract with the Timberwolves, after which he might make a decision on his retirement.

They have the likes of Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr. coming through the ranks, but the franchise still needs to fill a vacant spot on the roster.

Among several names that have been discussed, two former New York Knicks players who had impressive stints last season under Tom Thibodeau were also brought up.

Cam Payne and Landry Shamet have been discussed as options to fill the vacant spot

Cam Payne and Landry Shamet were both players that did well for the Knicks last season, when called upon.

Payne even managed to start five games and impressed in his appearances there, meanwhile, Shamet gave the boost the Knicks needed off the bench throughout the second half of the season.

Both of these are veteran players and can match the productivity of Conley if he decides to retire after next season.

Payne had a stellar playoff game against the Detroit Pistons, where he scored 11 points in the fourth quarter of Game 1, showcasing his ability to step up in tough situations.

Shamet is a career 38.5% three-point shooter and is also a player who can defend, which is why adding him to the backcourt will help the Timberwolves massively.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have one roster spot available and are hoping to fill it with a guard.

They are currently considering Malcolm Brogdon, Cam Payne, Landry Shamet & Bones Hyland. With Hyland being the frontrunner for the spot.

Bones Hyland is currently the front runner for the final spot on Timberwolves

Despite having multiple options, The Athletic reported that Bones Hyland was the front runner to occupy the final spot on the team.

He featured in four games for the Timberwolves last season and although Hyland did not get a lot of minutes, his performances in their G-League team were stunning.

Hyland has come off the bench for teams like Denver Nuggets and LA Clippers, but he has never really played valuable minutes throughout his career.

However, his talent has never been in question and a chance on the Timberwolves will once again give him the chance to prove that.

The former first round pick was drafted by the Timberwolves team president Tim Connelly, when he was with the Nuggets, which is why the 49-year-old will be aware of his talents.

His speed and handles are brilliant for a young player and while playmaking is not his strength, Hyland will certainly add energy to the Timberwolves backcourt.
