16 years on from The Decision, LeBron James is again pondering a free agency move, and the Miami Heat are odds-on favorites to land him again.
For weeks now, we have been waiting to find out where James will be playing his basketball next season. A return to the Eastern Conference looks increasingly likely, with the Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers thought to be leading the race for his signature.
The Heat even went so far as to schedule a livestream announcement of his arrival for the 27th of July, though team sources now confirm that was simply an administrative activity — whatever that means.
But if he does end up back in Miami, it will be yet another shrewd acquisition by Pat Riley, who is no stranger to blockbuster free agent moves.

LeBron James – 2010
Far and away the greatest free agent signing not just in Miami Heat history, but in the history of the NBA. ‘The Decision’ shifted the balance of power across the league overnight.
Bringing prime LeBron to South Beach delivered four consecutive NBA Finals appearances, back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013, two regular-season MVPs, and two Finals MVPs.
With rumors swirling about a potential reunion 16 years later, his former Heat teammate Chris Bosh recently made the case for why a South Beach sequel makes total sense.
He said: “If I were in LeBron James’ shoes, I would choose Miami, and here’s why: If you really think about it, where do people go when you’re about to retire or you’re retired? You know what I’m saying?
“You don’t have to make nothing up in this situation. You see that he’s picked up the sticks, he’s got a new hobby in golf. Where can you golf all the time?”
And speaking of Bosh…
Chris Bosh – 2010
Landing alongside LeBron in that wild summer of 2010, Bosh remains one of the most underrated superstars in modern basketball history.
He sacrificed his individual numbers — going from a 24-and-10 focal point in Toronto to Miami’s third option — becoming the defensive anchor and versatile big that made the Big Three era tick.
Without Bosh anchoring the defense and spacing the floor, those championship rings simply don’t happen.
Jimmy Butler – 2019
This one is a bit of a cheat, but I couldn’t leave him out. Jimmy Butler was a free agent in 2019, but arrived in Miami via a sign-and-trade deal with the 76ers. It’s my list, so he gets in.
The signing might not have felt like an all-time blockbuster to outsiders at the time, but it completely redefined the Heat’s post-Big Three era.
Jimmy Buckets immediately embraced Heat Culture and dragged Miami back into elite contention, leading the franchise to two improbable NBA Finals runs in 2020 and 2023 while cementing himself as one of the game’s ultimate playoff risers.
Ray Allen – 2012
“The Shot” in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals alone is enough to lock Ray Allen’s spot on this list — saving the Heat’s season and securing a second straight title.
But his overall impact went far beyond one legendary moment.
Snatching a lethal shooter directly away from rivals Boston was a massive coup, giving Miami elite spacing off the bench and unmatched clutch shooting whenever the stakes were highest.
It was a close call between him and current-day LeBron, but I gave Allen the edge. Now, if LeBron does return and things go well with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, we’ll have to revisit.
