Let’s rip the band-aid off. Yes, the weather delay in Kansas City was unacceptable in how it was executed and threw a wet rag on the National Women’s Soccer League weekend. A weekend that is not over yet with a Monday night affair between the Seattle Reign and Chicago Stars still to come.
Here’s how they shape up after most of Week 16:
Cream of the Crop
Kansas City Current (13-2-1, 40 pts; vs Pride, 0-0): The real heat surrounding the Current was that which delayed their marquee home match against the Pride for more than three hours. Perhaps scheduling summer day games in the Midwest should become a thing of the past. When the match finally started, the Current played the full 90 minutes without scoring a goal for the first time ever at CPKC Stadium. They haven’t been great since the break, but they also haven’t conceded a goal and are 11 points clear in the NWSL Shield race with 10 to play.
Best of the Rest
San Diego Wave FC (8-3-5, 29 pts; @ Bay, 2-1): The Wave got the ship righted with a couple of nice goals in a 2-1 road win at Bay FC. It looked like things may unravel when they conceded a penalty that tightened things up for the final 15 and stoppage time. They managed it though and jumped into second place. The win puts bookend victories around the three consecutive draws.
