One major position change to note from Wisconsin football’s newly-released spring roster

Wisconsin redshirt senior Jackson Acker has flipped from a running back to a tight end ahead of 2025 spring practice.

The move comes as new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes shifts Wisconsin back to a pro-style offensive system, one that should return an emphasis to the blocking tight end and fullback positions.

Acker originally joined the program as a three-star running back recruit in the class of 2021, ranked as the No. 559 player in the class, No. 36 athlete and No. 5 in-state recruit. The Verona, Wisconsin, native began his Badger career at fullback under former head coach Paul Chryst. Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi led the running back room at the time, eliminating any chance for Acker to see significant carries early in his career. As a fullback, he took six carries for 34 yards and a touchdown as a freshman, then started nine games as a sophomore in 2022, catching five passes for 73 yards and a score.

Acker shifted to running back upon Phil Longo’s arrival in 2023. He operated as one of the Badgers’ primary backups that season, especially after Mellusi suffered a season-ending injury in Week 4 against Purdue. 2023 became Acker’s most productive season: 72 carries, 322 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 19 receptions, 108 receiving yards and one receiving score.

However, the veteran’s role diminished entering 2024. Tawee Walker’s arrival, plus the emergence of both freshman Darrion Dupree and veteran Cade Yacamelli, pushed the veteran down the depth chart. He took one carry for four rushing yards, plus caught five passes for 29 receiving yards.

Acker now profiles as a hybrid fullback/tight end in Grimes’ system. Ball State transfer Tanner Koziol is set to lead the room, with junior Tucker Ashcraft also playing significant snaps. Acker has experience both rushing and receiving from a fullback position out of the backfield. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he emerged as the team’s leader at that position.

Wisconsin will begin its spring practice session on Thursday. The immediate difference in the Badgers’ offensive approach under Grimes will be a major storyline — Acker’s position change begins to signal that shift. The unit is arguably the biggest factor in the team’s quest for a turnaround after a poor first two seasons under Luke Fickell.
